This year, the team at Matthews Eastmoore is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary by giving back to the Sarasota community with 25 Acts of Kindness. Each month, we have engaged in two acts of giving back. January, February, March, and April were great months–and May was no exception!
This month, we participated in Pay it Forward Day and worked with USO Wishbook to send letters and gifts to our troops.
Pay it Forward
April 28th was Pay it Forward Day. Pay It Forward Day is a global initiative whose mission is to create a huge ripple of kindness felt across the world. The organization believes that small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, will make the world better! This year’s goal for Pay it Forward Day (PIFD) was to inspire over 10 million acts of kindness.
Matthews Eastmoore celebrated by providing our staff with Starbucks gift cards. We encouraged them to use all or a portion of the gift card to make someone else’s day. The stories of kindness are too good not to share:
Tricia Bernier and North Port Police Department
Paralegal Tricia Bernier stopped in one Saturday morning to the North Port Police Department and asked the front desk attendant if there was a officer that particularly liked coffee. Officer Joe Gaither promptly arrived in the lobby and Tricia presented him with the gift card. She said she was treated like she had just given a thousand dollars to the force. The officer was so appreciative, he insisted that they take a picture to post on Facebook. Tricia said it made her Saturday!
Susan Narring Surprises a Server with Kindness
Paralegal Susan Narring didn’t use the Starbucks gift card to pay it forward, but created her own act of kindness. While dining out recently, she and her husband chatted with their server, as they always do when eating out, just to make a personal connection. They learned their server was a single mother with an 11 year old son, who was working 12-14 hour days to support him. She was struggling to pay her mortgage and did not have much time to spend with her son.
Since Susan had recently been given a gift card by Matthews Eastmoore, she decided to “pay it forward” and surprise the server with an especially generous tip. After paying the bill, Susan and her husband wanted to leave before their server discovered the surprise, but she caught up to them with tears streaming down her face, hugging them and telling them that they had no idea how much this thoughtful gesture meant to her. Susan explained it best, “Since we don’t always know what someone else is dealing with, we find that simple acts of kindness go a long way in making a difference in the lives of others. We are thankful for the opportunity to bless others in this small way.”
United Services Organization
“The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.”
The United Services Organization is the nation’s leading organization serving service men and women and their families. USO is by their side from the time they join through their deployments. The organization continues to serve them as they transition back to their communities.
The USO is a congressionally chartered, private organization that relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations, and corporations to support its activities. A strong network of volunteers accomplish its mission of connection.
For its tenth act of kindness, Matthews Eastmoore staff gathered at lunch to write cards for troops overseas. It was a fun lunch filled with stories of friends and family in the service and lots of creativity! Along with the cards, Matthews Eastmoore provided several items from the USO Wishbook for the troops overseas.
