25 Acts of Kindness April Recap: Goodwill Collection Drive Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon

25 acts aprilThis year, the team at Matthews Eastmoore is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary by giving back to the Sarasota community with 25 Acts of Kindness. We’re working with local charities and we are proud to announce we have  engaged in eight acts of kindness. This makes two acts of kindness for each month of the year—two in January, February, March, and now April as well!

This month, we organized a Goodwill collection drive and participated in the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon, Sarasota. Read more about these events below.

Goodwill

Goodwill began in 1902 when Rev. Edgar J. Helms collected used items from his city and taught people without jobs to repair them. It was then that his philosophy of “a hand up, not a handout” was born. After more than one hundred years, the mission at Goodwill is the same: helping connect people in need with opportunities to succeed. Goodwill helps give people confidence through rewarding work and dignity through self-sufficiency.

Earlier this month, legal assistant Alison Prouty spearheaded a Goodwill collection drive. The team collected clothes, shoes, books, and household items and filled two vehicles for delivery to Goodwill Manasota. These items will help change the lives of people in our community.

“Our mission is to assist people with disabilities and other barriers to employment by providing job skills training and employment opportunities. When you donate your gently-used items to Goodwill, you extend a helping hand to another person in the community and you help us change a life.”

How You Can Help

Anyone can volunteer with Goodwill, donate to Goodwill donation centers anytime, donate money directly to Goodwill, request a complimentary pick-up of large furniture, or set up your own collection drive in your community.

Your donations help the mission of Goodwill become a reality.

Southeastern Guide Dogs

Since 1982, Southeastern Guide Dogs has been providing guide dogs to people with visual impairments and veterans with PTSD. They match over one hundred dogs every year with people who need them, at no cost to the recipients. Southeastern Guide Dogs is accredited by both the International Guide Dog federation and Assistance Dogs International.

“We transform lives by bringing together inspiring people and extraordinary dogs. We provide all of our services free of charge and receive no government funding.”

On Saturday, April 22, associate Josh Dell arranged for eight members of the firm to participate in the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon fundraiser at Sarasota’s Payne Park. A number of other ME team members made financial contributions to the guide dogs.

The walkathon included music, food, shopping, humans, and of course, dogs. The event brought in money to raise and train dogs to match with visually impaired students. You can read more about this year’s event in the Herald Tribune.
